Captain Jaakko grew up in Finland, where boys are born with the sea in their hearts. As a young man, Jaakko explored much of the continent before landing in Spain. In 1985, he attended the Gibraltar School of Navigation to launch his professional career in the yachting industry. As a sailor he has crossed the Atlantic nine times. He has lived all over the Caribbean: Antigua, St. Maarten, Tortola, St. Thomas, St. Lucia, and the Grenadines, and knows the region intimately.

Captain Jaakko is genteel without formality, has a subtle sense of humor, and evokes confidence from the moment you meet him. His wide range of experience has given him a keen ability to plan activities that delight his charter guests. When guests relaxing on the deck with a cocktail, pose the question, ‘hey, what shall we do tomorrow?’ Jaakko has a ready agenda in his head to suit them perfectly, from passive to extreme, from the spas of St. Barth to surfing in St. Maarten.

Jaakko’s hobby is watching hockey, which he played professionally in Germany, Switzerland and Austria until the age of 35. His other passion is deep-sea fishing, and there’s plenty of gear aboard YOLY. He is happy to take guests out on the 24-foot Parker center console to fish every day if they like that.
